Answers to Frequently Asked Questions

How will music classes help my child succeed academically?

Increasingly, our students are pushed to excel academically and it’s easy to conclude that music participation is a luxury we can’t afford.  However, you may be surprised to learn that studies prove that middle and high school students who study instrumental music score significantly higher than their non-band/ orchestra peers on standardized tests, including college entrance exams.  Children who are active in school music programs get the unique opportunity to experience the intrinsic value of excellence.   Participation in band, orchestra or choir fosters creativity, teamwork and a sense of cooperation among students.  Furthermore, music majors are the most likely group of college grads to be admitted to medical school with an impressive 66% admittance rate.  (Only 44% of biochemistry majors were admitted.)  And most importantly, music is a fun and rewarding activity that can be pursued for a lifetime.

What happens at an instrument fitting?

When you sign up for an instrument fitting, your child will select three instruments to try. One of the music teachers will show him/ her how to make sounds on the instruments so that everyone can see what instruments are easy and comfortable.  This is a great way to see what instrument "fits" your child well and gives him/ her the greatest chance at success!

The instrument fitting is a no pressure, fun way to explore the various instruments, meet the teachers and find out more about performing arts!   We do not eliminate children from participation based on the instrument fitting.  The time we spend with your child during the instrument fitting helps us to provide an appropriate placement for him or her.  Although it is not required that a parent be present, we highly encourage parent participation in the process.

Before leaving, we will ask your child to rate their choices and we will use that information to help as we recommend an instrument for your child.  Please be aware that enrollment in some instrument sections (such as percussion and saxophone) is limited.

What happens at the choir experience?

During the choir experience, students will participate in a sample rehearsal with the choir teacher.  During this time, you will get to meet the teacher to learn more about what choir is like in middle school.

What kind of time commitment is involved?

All band, orchestra and choir classes meet during the regular school day. Because we know students are very busy, after school requirements are at a minimum. Our evening activities are limited to three nights per year when the students present their concerts. Dates for these events will be given to all students and parents the first week of school. Students in band or orchestra are also responsible for practicing their instrument at home.

Can I still participate in after school activities if I am in Performing Arts?

Yes!!!  Because the band, orchestra and choir rehearsals are during the school day, you can easily participate in after school activities without conflict.  A large percentage of our student musicians are active in other school groups.

When can I Start?
Most of our students are very anxious to begin playing their instruments right away! A three-week summer program for beginning band and orchestra students has been scheduled from June 4  -  21, 2018. The students will meet for 50-minute classes each morning (Monday – Thursday). Specific times for each class will be provided prior to Spring Break. Because of the smaller class size and like-instrument instruction, these classes will help your child get a great start on his or her instrument! It is strongly recommended that all beginning instrumental students participate in the summer classes.

What is summer band and orchestra and what if I cannot attend?

Summer Band and Orchestra classes will take place for twelve days in June for 50 minutes each day. The big advantage of the summer classes is to have smaller classes only with students who play the same instrument (flutes with flutes, etc.) You will learn the basics of playing your instrument and even learn to play some fun songs! You will also get to meet new friends before you even start 6th grade! We hope that every student can attend the summer classes, but if you are not able, we suggest that you take a few private lessons on your new instrument over the summer so that you are ready when school starts.

What is the cost of participation?

The primary expense of band and orchestra participation is that of providing an instrument for your child.  Most parents will choose to rent an instrument at the start.  Rental fees for instruments are very affordable and apply toward ownership of the instruments.  More information can be found at www.paigesmusic.com.

Students will need to purchase a red Creekside Performing Arts polo shirt to be used as concert attire.  The cost is approximately $12.  Orders will be taken in September.  If you have a shirt from an older child, you are welcome to use it.
